+972 Magazine is a news and opinion online magazine, established in August 2010 by a group of four Israeli writers in Tel Aviv with shared progressive views, including opposition to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Background
Noam Sheizaf, a co-founder and the +972 chief executive officer, said they wanted to express a new and "mostly young voice which would take part in the international debate regarding Israel and Palestine". They named the website in reference to the 972 international dialling code, which is shared by Israel and the Palestinian territories.
+972 Magazine articles are written primarily in English to reach an international audience.
Microsoft and Unit 8200
In a joint investigation by +972 Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call, it was revealed that Microsoft's Azure cloud platform was being used by Unit 8200, Israel's elite spy agency. The report disclosed a secret project to transfer large volumes of sensitive intelligence into Azure, which began after a 2021 meeting between Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella and the unit's commander.
The investigation found that the collaboration enabled Unit 8200 to build a system that collected, played back, and analysed the content of millions of cellular calls from the entire population of Gaza and the West Bank. This surveillance data, which amounted to as much as 8,000 terabytes, was held in a Microsoft data center located in the Netherlands. The report also highlighted that this cloud-based platform was utilised in the Gaza offensive to prepare for airstrikes.[1]
Following the publication of the joint investigation, Microsoft launched an external inquiry. This inquiry resulted in the tech giant terminating Unit 8200's access to some of its cloud storage and A.I. services.[2]

Illuminating what Israel wanted kept hidden
In November 2025, +972 Magazine published "The genocide through their eyes":
Two years on from Hamas’ October 7 attack and the start of Israel’s onslaught on Gaza, the vast majority of the enclave lies in ruins. Israel’s aerial bombardment, ground invasion, and hermetic blockade of the territory, which long predates the latest offensive, have decimated Gaza’s population, its infrastructure, and its social fabric, amounting to the crime of genocide.
As the Israeli military continues to bomb the Strip in what it euphemistically describes as “enforcement” of the US-brokered ceasefire, the official death toll has surpassed 68,000. Multiple recent studies suggest the true figure could be many tens of thousands higher. Hospitals — those that have not been destroyed beyond repair — are struggling to treat the wounded, the hungry, and the sick who survived amid severe shortages of everything from anesthesia to clean water.
Throughout all of this death and devastation, there has been one constant: the presence of Palestinian journalists on the ground reporting on every massacre, land grab, and war crime. With Israel barring the international media from entering Gaza, these journalists have served as the world’s window into the genocide. Over 250 have been killed, many of them directly targeted because of their work, making this the deadliest conflict for the press since the Committee to Protect Journalists began collecting data almost half a century ago.
For the past two years, +972 has worked closely with a team of freelance reporters inside Gaza who have covered all angles of Israel’s onslaught — from Beit Lahiya in the north to Rafah in the south. Together, they have illuminated what Israel worked hard to keep hidden, while enduring the same immense danger, starvation, repeated displacement, and loss of loved ones as the subjects of their reporting.
Through their writing — a selection of which we have excerpted below, and which can be read in full through the links provided — they have sought to piece together the fragments of life, loss, and resistance that have defined Gaza under Israel’s relentless bombardment. This is the genocide through their eyes.[3]
Carbon dioxide asphyxiation
On 6 February 2025, +972 published "Bomb the area, gas the tunnels: Israel’s unbridled war on Gaza’s underground":
The Israeli army intensively bombarded residential areas in Gaza when it lacked intelligence on the exact location of Hamas commanders hiding underground, and intentionally weaponised toxic byproducts of bombs to suffocate militants in their tunnels, an investigation by +972 Magazine and Local Call can reveal.
The investigation, based on conversations with 15 Israeli Military Intelligence and Shin Bet officers who have been involved in tunnel-targeting operations since October 7, exposes how this strategy aimed to compensate for the army’s inability to pinpoint targets in Hamas’ subterranean tunnel network.
The investigation also reveals how Israel has known for years that the use of bunker-buster bombs releases the lethal gas carbon monoxide as a byproduct, which can kill people inside a tunnel through asphyxiation even at a distance of hundreds of metres from the strike location. After discovering this by chance in 2017, the army first tested it as a strategy in Gaza in 2021, and employed it in its efforts to kill Hamas commanders after October 7. This way, the army could attack targets without knowing their precise location, and without having to rely on direct hits.
“The gas stays underground, and people suffocate,” Brig-Gen Guy Hazoot, the only source willing to be named, told +972 and Local Call. “We realised we could effectively target anyone underground using the Air Force’s bunker-buster bombs, which, even if they don’t destroy the tunnel, release gases that kill anyone inside. The tunnel then becomes a death trap.”[4]
Long-term political change
On 3 January 2025, +972 published an article titled "What is the duty of the Israeli left in a time of genocide?"
- Israeli leftists have been more divided and marginalised than ever since the October 7 assault, with joint Palestinian-Jewish struggle at a breaking point. Yet their sights remain set on long-term political change.[5]
