In politics, a defector is a person who gives up allegiance to one state in exchange for allegiance to another, changing sides in a way which is considered illegitimate by the first state. This happens with spooks, politicians, diplomatic staff and others.
This person then might be in need of protection and whatever information he or she brings into the public of the receiving state, may be tainted by the intelligence agencies and current national security needs of that state.
