EIM has pressured BP into a wholesale reversal of its commitment to net zero

Elliott Investment Management L.P. (EIM) is an American investment management firm. It is also one of the largest hedge funds in the world.

Background

EIM is the management affiliate of American hedge funds Elliott Associates L.P. and Elliott International Limited. Elliott Associates was founded in 1977 by Paul Singer, who is Co-CEO, President, and Co-Chief Investment Officer. Fellow Co-CEO is Jonathan Pollock.

Originally founded in New York City, EIM moved its headquarters to West Palm Beach, Florida in 2020.[1]

Overview

Paul Singer created Elliott Associates in January 1977, starting with $1.3 million from friends and family and choosing the Elliott brand as it is his middle name. In its earliest years, the firm focused on convertible arbitrage. Since the 1987 stock market crash and early 1990s recession, however, the firm has transitioned into a multi-strategy hedge fund. Elliott Associates manages $8.6 billion and is EIM's primary domestic fund.

Elliott Management Corporation is an employee owned hedge fund sponsor that is currently closed to new investors. As of mid-2024, Elliott counted 570 employees in New York City, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong and is one of the oldest hedge funds under continuous management.[2]

Back to Petroleum

On 7 September 2025, The Observer published an article entitled "Back to Petroleum" and sub-titled:

"In 2020, BP told the world that it cared about climate change.
"Today, it is doubling down on oil and gas.
"This is the story of how financial markets gave up on net zero and how an aggressive US hedge fund helped pressure Britain’s best-known energy company to abandon its green ambitions.[3]
