Euroscepticism is a range of political position which oppose the European Union. It ranges from those who oppose some EU institutions and policies and seek reform (Eurorealism, Eurocritical, or soft Euroscepticism), to those who oppose EU membership and see the EU as unreformable (anti-European Unionism, anti-EUism, or hard Euroscepticism).[1]
Problems with term
The term is a negative framing, not made the people themselves, but used by pro-EU government media and Commercially-controlled media, and bordering on an enemy image.[2] The opposite of Euroscepticism, often known as "pro-European" is also a - positive - framing, as it implicitly equals the European Union with Europe.
The Czech president Václav Klaus rejected the term Euroscepticism for its negative undertones, saying at a meeting in April 2012 that the expressions for a Eurosceptic and their opponent should be "a Euro-realist" and someone who is "Euro-naïve", respectively.[3]
François Asselineau of the French Popular Republican Union has criticised the use of the term 'sceptic', and would rather advocate the use of the term "Euro opponent".[4]
