Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is an American politician who became the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district in 2019.
3,500% wealth increase
In her 2025 financial disclosure, she reported that her third and current husband, Tim Mynett, had a stake in two companies that at the end of 2023 were worth no more than $51,000, but at the end of 2024 were worth between $6 and $30 million, leading to an increase in their net wealth of at least 3,500 percent in just one year. One of Mynett's two companies is a venture capital firm, Rose Lake Capital LLC. Their assets increased from less than $1,000 in assets in 2023 to between $5,000,000 and $25,000,000 by the end of 2024.[1][2]
Marrying brother
In 2002, Omar became engaged to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi. She has said they had an unofficial, faith-based Islamic marriage.[3] The couple had two children together,[4] including Isra Hirsi, one of the three principal organizers of the school strike for climate in the US.[5] Omar has said that she and Hirsi divorced within their faith tradition in 2008.[4]
It was long rumored in the Somali community that Omar and her second husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, from 2009 before a 2011 separation, are siblings, but because of a lack of paperwork in war-torn Somalia, positive proof has never been uncovered. The marriage happened as a way to skirt US immigration laws.[6][7]
In 2011 she "reconciled"" with Hirsi, with whom she had a third child in 2012.[8] In 2017, Elmi and Omar legally divorced, and Omar and Hirsi legally married in 2018. On October 7, 2019, Omar filed for divorce from Hirsi, citing an "irretrievable breakdown" of the marriage.[9] The divorce was finalized on November 5, 2019.[4][10]
In March 2020, Omar married Tim Mynett, a political consultant whose political consulting firm, the E Street Group, received $2.78 million in contracts from Omar's campaign during the 2020 cycle.[11][12][13]
