The Republic of Ireland is a nation state whose incremental independence from the British Crown began with the actions of 24 April 1916 and continued through the subsequent War of Independence of 1919 - 1921. Its territory comprises the majority of the island of Ireland. The predominantly Protestant part, Northern Ireland, remains part of the United Kingdom.
