Jerome Michael Adams is an American anesthesiologist and a vice admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps who was the 20th Surgeon General of the United States.
Education
Adams attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County through a full-tuition Meyerhoff Scholarship, a grant dedicated to minority students interested in the sciences. Adams received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and his Bachelor of Arts in Biopsychology. Additionally, Adams studied abroad in the Netherlands and Zimbabwe.
Adams attended medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine on a scholarship from the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. He also received a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000, with a focus on chronic disease prevention. Adams completed his internship in internal medicine (2002–2003) at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, and his residency in anesthesiology (2003–2006) at Indiana University. He is board certified in anesthesiology.
Career
In October 2014, Adams was appointed Indiana State Health Commissioner, where he led the State's responses to Ebola (there were no cases in Indiana, but Adams coordinated the state’s preparedness program, including ensuring the state had enough personal protective equipment and helping Indiana University Health to build an Ebola room to treat potential victims[1]), Zika, and a HIV "outbreak"[2]. He was originally appointed by Governor Mike Pence and re-appointed by newly elected Governor Eric Holcomb in 2017.
As the Surgeon General, Dr. Adams held the rank of Vice Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In this capacity, he oversaw the operations of approximately 6,500 uniformed health officers who are active in nearly 800 locations around the world.
Comparing Covid-19 to Pearl Harbor and 9/11
On 5. April 2020, Adams said “The next week is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment. It’s going to be our 9/11 moment,"[3], incidentally comparing it to deep state events.
Revolving door
In May 2020, he became a Board Member of Atea Pharmaceuticals, "supporting Atea in the development of its broader antiviral pipeline for severe viral diseases,"[4] and became an advisor to Eko Health, "at a time of accelerated company growth and a national focus on proactive, community-based early detection of cardiovascular disease."[5]
