former Canadian prime minister

Kim Campbell is a Canadian retired politician who briefly served as the first female Prime Minister of Canada in 1993.[1] Prior to becoming the final Progressive Conservative prime minister, she was also the first woman to be made minister of justice in Canadian history and the first woman to become minister of defence in a NATO member state.

After leaving politics she became involved in many NGOs.

Political career

Campbell became the new prime minister in June 1993 after Brian Mulroney resigned in the wake of declining popularity. In the 1993 Canadian federal election in October of that year, the Progressive Conservatives were decimated, losing all but two seats from their 156 seat majority government, with Campbell losing her own seat. Her 132-day premiership is the third-shortest in Canadian history.

Outside politics

Campbell was Secretary General of the Club de Madrid and was a trustee of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence.
