Brave New World as instruction manual
In a 2018 TED talk[1][2][3], Suttner praises gene-editing as a moral imperative. In the talk Suttner mentions:
- Having introduced Aldous Huxley, and referring to Brave New World, she says that "he showed us some tools, or gave us some ways of thinking, of redesigning the human being."
- The first tool will be the possibility to use stem cell technology—stem cell medicine—to derive gametes in the lab…..we're not yet there, but it will probably take only a couple of more years before we can have stem cell–derived sperm and eggs in the human.
- …..this is the ultimate idea: you could, in this person, make eggs that are fertilized by his own sperm and think about the possibility of self-fertilization, or "solo procreation" if you wish.
- this will allow us to go towards "the perfect family" as we have envisioned it….the whole concept of "rainbow families" where sometimes two, three, or four people come, and they already visit our clinics asking to have one child—all three or all four of them.
- at any age we will be able to make sperm or eggs; we won't need any donor material anymore.
- … maybe we want in the future also to manipulate other characteristics that make people better, smarter, more beautiful, more successful in life, and so on
- This is a still from a very nice movie that, if you haven’t watched it, you really should watch if you’re interested in Aldous Huxley’s ideas: this is the movie Gattaca. Because in the Gattaca world—just as in the world of Aldous Huxley—procreation is not something that is connected with sexuality, or with relationship, or family building anymore. You just go to a clinic—or a factory, if you wish—and you give your gametes. And, of course, if you don't have gametes at that time, you give some piece of skin (we take a skin biopsy), and then after so many months, you can pick up your child which has been genetically enhanced and designed according to the features that you want.
- Near the end of the video, Sutter mentions the eugenicist Oxford philosopher Julian Savulescu, declaring that “I like to quote him because he's really a smart guy”.
