Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality mobile game.
Data collection by users
The game is unusual in that it uses GPS signals and allows users to submit scans of the environment using the camera on their mobile device.[1] Soon after the discovery of this, commentators began speculating about the purposes that these scans would be put to.[2] In 2026 it was revealed that they had been used to make a 3D map that drones could use as a fallback in case GPS signals were unavailable.[3]
