Richard Alan Dwyer was a CIA spook who as Guyana Chief of Station was inside Jonestown while more than 900 Americans died.[1]
Career
He entered the diplomatic service in 1957, and worked for the CIA under diplomatic cover in Syria (1960-63) and Egypt (1963-66), Bulgaria (1970-72). In Thailand, he worked with U.S. Ambassador to Guyana John Burke, who was described by CIA whistleblower Philip Agee as having worked for the CIA since 1963, when he was the assistant deputy chief of the political section in Saigon.[2]
In Chad 1974-1977, a Peace Corps volunteer identified him as the CIA chief.[3]
Dwyer, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy, was identified in the San Mateo Times of December 14, 1979, as the CIA's Chief of Station in Guyana.[4][5]
From Martinique (1980-83), he helped prepare the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983.
He retired in 1984.[6]
Jonestown massacre
Dwyer accompanied Leo Ryan on his visit to Jonestown in the Guyanese jungle and was the only person in the area who had a functioning radio. At 9:18 p.m. on 18 November 1978, he announced Ryan's death at the Port Kaituma airstrip to the CIA. The State Department did not find out until the next morning.[7]
Death
Dwyer died in 1991.[6]
