Saint Barthélemy (or St. Barts / St. Barths) is a French overseas territory in the Caribbean. The island lies about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of of Saint Martin. In 2003 the population/citizens voted in favor of secession from Guadeloupe to form a separate overseas collectivity of France. The collectivity, while remaining a part of France, has broad authority over its own fiscal and legislative affairs.[1] It's population of 10,660 (January 2023 census) are descendants of the first settlers, of Breton, Norman, Poitevin, Saintongeais and Angevin lineage, adding to that is a big community of Portuguese emigrants (around 3,000 people).
Saint-Barthélemy has long been considered a playground of the rich and famous, thanks to the location and the service economy having been geared towards catering to them.[2][3] The island is known for its beautiful pristine beaches, gourmet dining in chic bistros and high-end designer shopping. Many superyachts are spotted there during the year.[4]
