Sunscreen, also known as sunblock, sun lotion or sun cream is an industry valued at $15.47 billion as of 2025.[1]

Official narrative

Sunscreen is a photoprotective topical product for the skin that helps protect against sunburn and prevent skin cancer.[2]

Overview

The top 5 corporations dominate nearly 65% of the market — with L'Oréal leading at 16.1%, followed by Beiersdorf, Johnson & Johnson, Estée Lauder, and Shiseido.[3]

In 2025, L'Oréal intended to build it into a year-round business, to drive sun care sales 12 months a year, including winter. "We need to encourage a new era of SPF use — one that defies traditional notions of seasonal sun care," explained a spokeswoman for L’Oréal. The aim of the campaign was not to compete for share but to expand the market. "If more consumers understand the importance of sun protection, all brands have a greater opportunity to meet their needs".[4]

Does Sunscreen Cause Cancer? The Study They Ignored

A 2024 UK Biobank study involving over 470,000 people found that individuals who reported using sunscreen more frequently had substantially higher risk of multiple skin cancers — even after researchers accounted for major confounding factors like age, sex, skin type, tanning ability, sunburn history, sunlamp use, and time spent outdoors.[5][6]
