Technology has debilitating effects which have long been a concern.[1]

Artificial intelligence

Full article: Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) is the branch of computer science which seeks to re-create the intelligence of human beings in software.[2] It gained more popularity in the 2010s with deepfake technology and even more in the early 2020s with the invention of the large language model. This lead to products such as automated chatbots in which Google, Microsoft and OpenAI invested heavily.[3]

Criticism

Prominent critics included Ivan Illich and Jacques Ellul.[4]

Development

Technological development relies on research, which may be expensive and fruitless. A common pattern is for it to be contracted out at public expense, for example in universities, but then used for private gain once commercially viable. For the deep state, technologies of social control and mass surveillance are of particular interest.

Economy

Big Tech, aka the technocracy, dominates the industry.

A confluence of rapid technological developments continue to offer ever more extreme technologies for monitoring and control. Since 2001, the strategy of tension has assumed prominence as a means of inculcating fear in an effort to push forward public acceptance of mass surveillance. While the threat of "terrorism" remains extremely small, as compared to other everyday threats such as traffic accidents,[6] public fear of it are being stoked, most obviously by false flag attacks, but also by nurturing of enemy images such as that of the "radicalised" of "extremist" Muslims.

Robotics is the interdisciplinary study and practice of the design, construction, operation, and use of robots.[10] Within mechanical engineering, robotics is the design and construction of the physical structures of robots, while in computer science, robotics focuses on robotic automation algorithms.[11]
