The 116 Club is a secretive gathering spot in Washington for the politicians and lobbyists. Former bank executive and 116 member Robert Tillery summarized the Club as "the other place where congress meets...by invitation only"[1][2][3][4]
History
The club, located a few minutes walk from the US Capitol, is a continuation of the Quorum Club, which closed in the mid-1960s after the attention around the sex scandal between John F. Kennedy and Ellen Rometsch, an alleged East German spy.
Membership
The 116 doesn’t have a website or host public events and only dues-paying associates and their guests are allowed on the premises.
Members of congress, staffers, administration officials, and other government employees pay an initiation fee of $100 and $25 in monthly dues, while lobbyists, political operatives, corporate executives and everyone else have to pay $1,500 as an initiation fee and $60 in monthly dues.[1]
Board
In 2017 the board included Peggy Renken Hudson, the Direct Marketing Association’s senior vice president of government affairs; Dan Tate of the lobbying firm Forbes Tate Partners; Joseph H. Kimmitt, executive vice president of government operations and industry relations at Oshkosh Corp.; in-house Nike lobbyist Jesse McCollum; lobbyists Robert Schramm, Ray Bragg and Amy R. Hammer; Robert Holifield, co-founder and managing principal of Lincoln Policy Group; lawyer William Oldaker; andNeil Chatterjee, policy adviser for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.[5]
An unnamed club member told The New York Times in 1974 that "The membership is the innermost of the 'in' group...Much of the major Congressional legislation affecting billions and billions of dollars is either written or influenced there," said another in that article. “But you’ll never see in The New York Times or The Washington Post that Senator Smith had lunch with Lobbyist Jones at the 116 Club."[6]
