Mexican drug-implicated police chief who after being exposed escaped to Israel. | |
Tomás Zerón de Lucio is a Mexican drug-implicated police chief, also implicated in torture, evidence tampering, and abduction, who after being exposed escaped to Israel.
Activities
Zerón was head of Mexico's Criminal Investigation Agency, the country’s equivalent of the FBI, and played a central role in the 2014 capture of El Chapo Guzmán.[1]
Accusations
He was later accused of torture, evidence tampering, and abduction in connection with the cover-up of the investigation into the 2014 disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students, whose case he had been tasked with solving.[2] A panel of international investigators discredited his findings, discovering that crucial testimony was obtained under torture and evidence was mishandled.
In a WikiLeaks leak from 2005, Zerón was linked to the purchase of the Pegasus malware, developed by NSO Group, acquired by the Mexican government, to carry out espionage on opposition politicians, journalists and civil society activists. The leaked emails identified Zeron as the ultimate buyer of the Israeli-made software.[3]
Separately, Mexico investigated whether Zerón embezzled more than 1.1 billion pesos, approximately $85 million, earmarked for the purchase of defense and intelligence gear that in some cases was never delivered.[4]
Escape
He fled to Israel in 2019 and has been living in a luxury apartment in Tel Aviv's Neve Tzedek Tower.[5]
As far as it is known, Zerón is not Jewish, an can thus not claim automatic Israeli citizenship.
