Identical twin brothers who were the foremost perpetrators of organised crime in the East End of London from the late 1950s to 1967. | |
Ronald "Ronnie" Kray (24 October 1933 – 17 March 1995) and Reginald "Reggie" Kray (24 October 1933 – 1 October 2000), identical twin brothers, were the foremost perpetrators of organised crime in the East End of London, England, from the late 1950s to 1967. With their gang, known as the Firm, the Kray twins were involved in murder, armed robbery, arson, protection rackets and assaults. They also supplied young boys to VIP people for sex.
Career
In the 1960s, as West End nightclub owners, the Kray twins mixed with politicians and prominent entertainers such as Diana Dors, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. They became celebrities themselves, were photographed by David Bailey and interviewed on television.
The Kray twins were arrested on 8 May 1968 and convicted in 1969. Each was sentenced to life imprisonment. Ronnie was committed to Broadmoor Hospital in 1979 and remained there until his death on 17 March 1995 from a heart attack; Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August 2000, five weeks before he died of bladder cancer.
MI5 VIPaedophile protection
MI5 had a man, Teddy Smith, placed in a top position in the gang. Writer Clare Campbell worked this out based on information in MI5 files at the National Archives and the evidence of three brothers – Alfie, David and Bobby Teale. David Teale, a friend of the Krays, is certain that Smith was an MI5 mole. MI5 reportedly 'spent years protecting the Krays...Every time he got nicked, the case would mysteriously collapse, letting Reggie and Ronnie walk.' MI5 recruited Smith to gather intelligence on a ring of homosexual politicians and Establishment figures who were supplied with young boys by the Krays. For decades, Smith was believed to have been killed by Ronnie in 1967, but separate documents unearthed by amateur historian Ray Rose show he actually fled to Australia where he died, aged 74, in 2006.[1]
Their biographer John Pearson noteed that child sex orgies, involving boys as young as 10, were held at Ronnie's flat in Cedra Court. Attending these sex orgies were a host to top people such as the Liberal Party Leader Jeremy Thorpe and the Labour Party's Tom Driberg. They also held parties at various flats around London including that of BBC DJ Alan Freeman. It is believed that the BBC's Jimmy Savile and the Beatles manager Brian Epstein would sometimes visit Alan Freeman's flat.
Reportedly, the police uncovered a large child abuse ring centred on Ronnie Kray's house in Tattingstone in Suffolk. "Some of the boys were obtained via a close friend of (Benjamin) Britten's in London, who named him as one of the beneficiaries of the 'service': other'customers' included Lord Boothby (who frequently shared boys with Ronnie Kray himself) and the record producer Joe Meek."[2]
Postcards and letters between Boothby and Kray suggest visits to the paedophile ring operation running out of the Haut de la Garenne childrens home onthe island of Jersey.[3]
Other letters and photos, found in 1970 in a London train station, also implicated Lew Grade, Leslie Grade and Bernard Delfont, three Jews who 'had a monopoly' over the UK's entertainment industry.[4]
