Yoav Gallant is an Israeli politician and retired military general. A member of the Knesset for Likud, he was Minister of Defence from 2022 to 2024.
Career
Yoav Gallant is a former commander of the Southern Command in the Israel Defence Forces. In January 2015, he entered politics, joining the new Kulanu party.
After being elected to the Knesset, he was appointed Minister of Construction. At the end of 2018, he joined Likud. Gallant also previously held the posts of Minister of Aliyah and Integration and Minister of Education.[1]

During an interview on 7 February, 2025, Gallant admitted to ordering the implementation the Hannibal Directive, the protocol that involves killing captives along with their captors, and which was the cause of most deaths on October 7. When asked, Gallant responded: "I think that, tactically, in some places, it was given, and in other places, it was not given, and that is a problem". Gallant made the comments in his first interview since being dismissed as Defence Minister in November 2024. He also said that the ceasefire deal with Hamas in Gaza was nearly identical to an earlier proposal that Hamas was willing to agree to in April. [2]
ICC arrest warrant
On 20 May 2024, an arrest warrant for Yoav Gallant, as well as for other Israeli and Palestinian leaders, was requested by the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan as part of the ICC investigation in Palestine, on several counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Israel-Hamas war.[3]
