UralVagonZavod is a Russian machine-building company located in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. It is one of the largest scientific and industrial complexes in Russia and the largest main battle tank (MBT) manufacturer in the world. The company is under EU sanctions since March 2022.[1]
There are different reports about it's output after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in English media, the plant building the T-90, T-14 Armata and refurbishing the T-72 platform.[2]
- Estimates for the T-90M was 60-70 units pre 2022, but in 2023 production increased to 140-180 tanks, and in 2024 up to 250-300 as per reporting by www1.ru in August 2025 (citing estimates by Western experts)[3] numbers that are repeated elsewhere,[4][5] going back to research by Conflict Intelligence Team;[6]
- Wikipedia notes that in July 2023, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stated that the supplies and overhaul of T-72 and T-90 tanks there had surged 3.6 times since early 2022;[7][8]
- In November 2025 militarnyi.com reported about upcoming layoffs at the plant, along with other layoffs at the Ashinsky Metallurgical Plant, which supplies special alloys, rolled plates and electrical steel used in Russia’s defense, aviation, nuclear and oil and gas industries, writing: "Russian military-industrial complex is gradually entering a phase of depletion, despite a short-term increase in production after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine";[9]
- This is denied via their press office, as per reporting from www1.ru;[10]
- The production of the T-90M main battle tank could reach 1,000 annually by 2028, as per reporting by boltflight.com in July 2028;[11]
- www1.ru writes in April 2026, citing Kirill Fedorov, that the production volume of T-90M is 230 per year, along a general increase of tank production in Russia by 2.2 times according to State Duma deputy Vladimir Gutenev;[12]
- Conflict Intelligence Team writes in June 2025 that at least 540-630 T-90M tanks have been manufactured since the beginning of the war;[6]
- The production of the Aramata platform has likely only happened in very low numbers due to cost contraints;[13][14]
Other
Another facility which produces MBTs is in Omsk, the Omsktransmash plant that produces/refurbishes T-80s.[5]
