Peter Hultqvist was Sweden's Defence Minister from 2014 until 2022.
Career
Hultqvist graduated from school in 1977 and worked as a journalist until 1989. After that, he began to get involved in politics, first in his place of residence Borlänge and in the Dalarna county at the municipal level, and he also sat on the board of directors of various local companies, such as Borlänge Energi AB and HSB Dalarna, a housing construction company, which he headed as chairman of the board from 2009 to 2014.[1]
From 1989 to 1998 he sat on the Borlänge City Council, after which he became its chairman until 2006, at the same time he has been chairman of the Social Democrats in the Dalarna county since 2001 and was a member of the board of the entire party from 2001 to 2005. In 2006 he was elected to the Riksdag and in his first legislative period was a member of the Education Committee. From 2011 to 2014, he headed the Parliamentary Committee on Defense Affairs. In October 2014, after he had not been re-elected as an MP, he became Minister of Defense under the newly elected Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. From 2021 to October 18, 2022, he also held this position under Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.[1]
Opinions
"The entire European security system is being questioned and threatened by Russia's actions"[2]
Deep state
In a 2021 interview Hultquist admitted the existence of a deep state. In 2020, the Danish Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen received a secret report describing how Danish and Swedish defense corporations were surveilled by the NSA, using Denmark and the Danish intelligence agency. In 2021 it was also revealed that the NSA also spied on Swedish politicians. Hultqvists announced that it is "unacceptable" when "allies" eavesdrop on their partners – but that this would not affect Sweden's cooperation with the NSA.[3]
And these are thorough and comprehensive reviews. So that this is nothing that is handled with the left hand, or is something that one does not take seriously. These are questions about really, how the deep state should work. So that these are deeply serious questions.[4]
